Unani medicine, also known as Greek medicine or alternative medicine is a method of treating health-related issues, based on the use of plants or plant extracts that may be eaten or applied to the skin. The origin of Unani Medicine was based on the teachings of Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen, and later influenced by Indian and Chinese traditional system of medicine.
According to Unani medicine, management of any disease depends upon the diagnosis of disease. Proper diagnosis depends upon observation of the patient’s symptoms and temperament. Unani, like Ayurveda, is based on theory of the presence of the elements in the human body. According to Unani medicine practitioners, these elements are present in fluids and their balance leads to health and their imbalance leads to illness. Unani remedies are well rooted in medical practice. Since ancient times, doctors have collected information about herbs to treat a variety of illnesses and to assist with bodily functions. As a result, more than a quarter of all medicines used today contain active ingredients derived from those same ancient plants.
